We take a closer look at some of the advanced security features of the ZERO wallets

From its first announcement in April to the $430,000 raised at the recent mass sale, the NGRAVE ZERO has created quite a stir in the cryptomint community. Considered to be the most secure hardware wallet available on the market, it remains completely airborne, the ZERO is the first to obtain a superior EAL7 security rating.

But the devil is in their details, so they say, so while we waited for the first units of the device to be shipped, Cointelegraph asked NGRAVE CEO Ruben Merre to explain how it is done to be „the world’s most secure hardware wallet.

Necessity is the mother of invention

The ZERO emerged after the bad experiences of NGRAVE founders with cryptomoney security. Not finding any existing solution that they could fully trust with their cryptomon currencies, they set out to build their own.

In April 2018, the team began developing a functional prototype using a Raspberry Pi. It was the beginning of a journey that would see them collaborate with many world-class teams and individuals, including the recent acquisition of, Jean-Jacques Quisquater, as a consultant.

Quisquater is considered the father of zero-knowledge proof cryptography, and is cited in the Bitcoin Evolution white paper. So, what does the development of a secure hardware wallet bring?

„Jean-Jacques is heavily involved in revealing and resolving potential security threats, even those that are virtually off anyone else’s radar. Because he was involved in the development of many security projects, including those at secret government agencies, he knows the back doors like no other. He’s also one of the minds on our team that helps us think ahead.

No man is an island… but the NGRAVE ZERO is.
Much has been said about the fact that the ZERO stays completely in the air, avoiding USB and Bluetooth connectivity, to communicate only through QR codes that contain no data about users‘ private keys.

Furthermore, the private keys generated by the Perfect Key wallet system are not exclusively derived from a „master seed“ sent with the device. For added security, they incorporate biometric data elements such as fingerprints and the introduction of environmental randomness from factors such as light levels.

This might make you wonder, how can you import your existing crypto private keys into the device and whether they will be as secure as the newly generated ones?

„We support all forms of ’status quo‘ available for seed generation, so you can both import a mnemonic phrase made from another hardware wallet, regardless of length, or you can simply create a new one in ZERO. While we recommend using the perfect NGRAVE key because of its advanced security features, the user can basically choose what they are most comfortable with.
